Faces of Meth: The Ugly Truth About the Physical Side Effects of Meth

The Faces of Meth is a campaign started by a police station in Oregon to deter the abuse of meth.

They posted mug shots of meth users before and after to show just how devastating the physical effects of meth can be. The campaign went viral, and the before and after mug shots could be found across the web. Memes ensued, but our drug rehab in South Florida knows there is nothing comical about the cosmetic damage caused by meth.

The Physical Effects of Methamphetamine

As providers of meth addiction treatment in Pompano, we have seen more than our fair share of meth users walk in and out of our doors . While meth can have devastating effects on a person’s health, the physical damage is very apparent. So, before you think about using meth, beware of these physical effects of methamphetamine or you could become just another one of the many pictures similar to those from the Faces of Meth campaign.

Sores

People who abuse meth may have a series of scabs, sores, or scars over their face and body. These imperfections are a result of meth mites and can look like everything from bad acne to boils. Not only can they be unattractive, but they can even get infected and become life-threatening. If someone has sores all over their body, it may be a result of meth use.

Meth Mouth

Meth mouth is a common term designated for long-term meth users. When smoked repeatedly, meth can lead to serious and unsightly dental problems. These issues can range from cavities to rotten teeth. One study found that only 23% of meth users had all of their natural teeth.1 Not only is the meth user’s mouth less than attractive, but dental issues can lead to other serious health concerns.

Weight Loss & Malnourishment

While many people try to lose weight, meth and other drug use can lead to unnatural weight loss and malnutrition. The result is a body that looks boney or hallow. The face especially can give the person a sickly appearance that is not pleasant.

False Aging

If you look at many before and after shots of meth users, you would probably swear that years had passed in between.  Most of the time this is not true. Instead the combination of all the above along with poor personal hygiene can lead to a drastic false aging effect, and it does not look like they aged well either.

If you struggle with meth use or know someone who does, our IOP in Pompano may be able to help. Do not wait until you look in the mirror and no longer recognize the person looking back at you or your loved one is a shadow of their former selves.
