How to Find a Good Rehab Center

How to Find a Good Rehab Center

Now that you have made the awesome decision to get drug or alcohol addiction treatment, you might be wondering where you are going to receive that treatment. Choosing a rehab facility can be a challenging process. With all the options for rehab out there, how do you know what the best fit would be? Our Boston addiction treatment center is sharing some tips on how to find a good rehab center that focuses on your needs and can help you achieve long-term recovery.

What Kind of Rehabs Are There?

A major factor in choosing what rehab center to go to is understanding the several types of rehab facilities and levels of addiction care out there. The most common types of rehabs or programs are:

  • Medically Monitored Detox Centers: Medically assisted detox is usually the first step or level of care that patients go through in addiction treatment. During detox, patients are slowly weaned off the substance they are dependent on, such as alcohol or drugs. Medical detox is conducted under the care and supervision of medical staff to ensure patients remain healthy and successful in this process. Detox is a crucial aspect of recovery for many as it addresses both withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings, so you might want to add it to your “must” list of what you are looking for.
  • Residential/Inpatient Treatment Programs: Inpatient or residential treatment facilities require the patient to live in the facility where the program itself is located. The length of an inpatient program may vary in length from 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the individual’s needs. These types of programs are best suited for patients with long-term or severe substance use disorders, allowing them to recover away from outside distractions.
  • Outpatient Treatment Programs: Unlike residential treatment programs, outpatient drug rehab programs do not require patients to live on the premises while receiving treatment. Instead, patients attend scheduled meetings and events to help them build morale and receive emotional support throughout their recovery. These programs are best suited for individuals who have already completed a treatment program or require a less intensive form of care.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Intensive outpatient programs are the in-between of inpatient and outpatient care. These programs are flexible enough to allow the individual to receive addiction treatment multiple times a week while carrying on a routine at work, school, and home outside of rehab. IOPs are often used alongside residential treatment to help clients smoothly transition to their everyday lives. However, they do include medical detox treatment, which is why it’s a step up from PHP.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): Like IOP, PHP is a structured mental health or addiction treatment program that runs for several hours every day, three to five days per week. This program allows clients to commute to the facility to receive care and return home at the end of the day. Individuals who are medically stable, have adequate support at home, and have undergone treatment in the past are best qualified for PHP.

How to Choose a Rehab Facility

Your sobriety is important and understanding what to look for in a rehab facility can make an enormous difference in your recovery. The right program will increase your chances of not only completing treatment but also of staying sober long-term. Unfortunately, the sheer number of options can be a bit intimidating and stressful.

To make this process smoother, below are some tips on how to find a good rehab center and what to look for in a rehab facility that can help you make the right decision.

  • Ask yourself if you are medically stable: Physical dependence is an aspect of addiction, and people who have been using drugs for a long time will experience withdrawal symptoms if they suddenly stop using them. Withdrawals can be challenging, so much so that many people relapse to avoid them. Therefore, if you have not already undergone detox or have relapsed, it is integral that medically assisted detox is offered at the facility of your choosing.
  • Consider the facility’s amenities: Especially if you are going to be signing up for residential treatment, ensuring that the facility is clean, and comfortable, and offers various amenities can make a significant difference in your recovery. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to remain in treatment, so investigate the amenities available.
  • Consider the location: A common question asked when choosing a rehab facility is whether you want to be close to home or away from home. While some people benefit from being in familiar territory and having their loved ones close by, these might be distractions or temptations for others. With that said, consider whether it would benefit your recovery if you went to a rehab center near you or somewhere further away.
  • Consider the cost: Cost is a common factor for many choosing a rehab center. The truth is that the cost of rehab varies dramatically depending on the location, length of the program, the type of program, and the person’s insurance. Luckily, there are plenty of options out there for people with all kinds of budgets. There are also several options that can help you pay for rehab, including Medicaid, Medicare, and private health insurance.
  • Do they offer additional specialties or services: A wide variety of services is often a good sign in a rehab center. Specialties might include everything from gender-specific counseling groups to psychotherapy programs like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, and more. These additional services are often utilized in rehab programs to offer clients an additional boost and to help them transition to a sober lifestyle.
  • Sit down for a consultation: If you are down to a few rehab locations and are not sure of your decision, feel free to call the facilities or attend their admissions centers to ask them about their facility, services, payment options, amenities, and any other questions you might have. This could help you finalize your decision.
