Relapse Quotes to Keep You Going

Relapse Quotes to Keep You Going

Tillsonburg, ON / Canada - July 1 2019 New Naloxone nasal delivery method of Narcan distributed by healthcare professionals to help combat opioid crisis and reverse the effects of opioid overdose.

So, you did it. You completed your stay in rehab and have returned home with the plan to resume life with your newfound sobriety in your back pocket. Sadly, recovery is not an overnight remedy. For many, the challenge is facing unavoidable triggers in the outside world and still making the conscious choice to avoid relapsing. Today, our Banyan Stuart rehabilitation center gives some of our favorite addiction relapse quotes. You can reference these when you find yourself faced with temptation.

Some Things to Remember

No matter what, relapse does not have to define you. It may bring about feelings of guilt, shame, or anger, all of which are perfectly normal. It certainly is frustrating to feel like you need to start all over again. And while an individual's length of sobriety will get turned back, it offers even more opportunities to show up for yourself and those around you despite this disease. Whether your vice is alcohol or any other form of substance, learning how to maintain sobriety is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences out there.

With that being said, here are some of Banyan Stuart’s favorite quotes about relapse:[Text Wrapping Break]

“Though no one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.” - Carl Bard

We cannot reverse the choices we made, sober or not. What really counts is being able to practice acceptance of what has happened, recognize the lessons, and apply them moving forward.

“A bad day sober is better than a good day drunk” - Unknown

This may seem cliche, but even if we have a fond memory from times of intoxication, it is likely the substance in your system conflated it to be more sensational than it realistically was.

“I understood, through rehab, things about creating characters. I understood that creating whole people means knowing where we come from, how we can make a mistake, and how we overcome things to make ourselves stronger” - Samuel L. Jackson

Treatment and recovery can reveal things about ourselves that we otherwise may try to hide or forget. It is crucial that we learn how to sit with these memories, no matter how uncomfortable they may be, and appreciate that doing so with a sober mind is the most effective way to practice acceptance.

“Part of recovery is relapse. I dust myself off and move forward again.” - Steven Adler

It would be so easy if recovery concludes once we leave rehab, but it's simply not the case. If (or when) relapse occurs, understanding that it is part of the process is crucial, and if we can’t forgive ourselves, the cycle will only rage on.

“I am not defined by my relapses, but by my decision to remain in recovery despite them.” - Unknown

Going off our previous quote, accepting relapse as a part of recovery is imperative to the process as a whole. It is never ideal, but to make the conscious choice to admit a mistake was made is one of the most courageous things we humans can do.

“When setbacks arise - and they will from time to time - regroup, recharge, refocus, and refine.” - Rasheed Ogunlaru

Every mistake gives us an excellent opportunity to learn. If there was nothing left to learn, life would be quite boring. It is about facing these challenges, accepting them as a part of our individual journeys, and finding empowerment in the lessons they teach us.
