At Banyan Chicago, we offer a variety of drug rehabilitation programs for various substance abuse disorders at different stages of severity; however, it can sometimes be difficult to get help for yourself or a loved one. Identifying drug addiction can be difficult if you’re unfamiliar with the street names for drugs they may be used to acquire them.

We work closely with addicts who suffer from different addictions at our drug and alcohol treatment center in Illinois, and we wanted to provide a glossary of slang drug names to help. It’s important to familiarize yourself with these common slang terms for drugs so you can better identify substance abuse in a friend or family member.

Slang for Coke and Cocaine

  The first substance in our glossary of slang drug names is cocaine. Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that’s often snorted for recreational use and may be mixed with heroin. Without a cocaine treatment program, those addicted to cocaine are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Because there are different variations of cocaine, a variety of slang words for cocaine exist.

Slang Words for Heroin

  There are many different types of opioids that people abuse; one of the commonly abused opioids is heroin, which is typically injected and can be highly addictive. Without a heroin treatment program, this drug can be extremely dangerous and difficult to quit using. There is also a strong connection between heroin and opioid pain pills because people who begin abusing pills are more likely to turn to heroin for a more intense high. This means that even if you notice that a loved one is struggling with their prescription opioids, they may eventually experiment with heroin or have already begun to do so. This makes it even more important to learn heroin street slang.

  As more states legalize cannabis, we wanted to include it in our glossary of drug slang names. Marijuana comes from a plant and contains the mind-altering chemical THC. It is often seen as a gateway drug for other drugs. As this drug becomes more common, street names for marijuana will continue to multiply.

  Synthetic marijuana, or cannabinoids, are man-made mind-altering chemicals that are dried on material from shredded plants. Fake weed can be smoked or sold as liquids to be ingested in a variety of ways. Fake weed has become popular among teens and young adults. Slang drug terms for synthetic marijuana include:

  Methamphetamine can be extremely hazardous to a person’s health. Street Names for Amphetamine

  There are different variations of amphetamine street drugs that you may not even know about. Amphetamines are stimulants that affect the central nervous system. Common amphetamine drugs include Adderall, Benzedrine, Ephedrine, Ritalin, and methamphetamine. Someone on one of these drugs will often have more energy, be more focused, and may be overly confident. As with the other drugs on our glossary of drug slang words, there are many street names for stimulants like amphetamine.

  The opioid epidemic is on the rise, and we are seeing more and more people in our Chicago opiate treatment program. Prescription pain pills are also being abused more frequently. As a result, opioid slang names are a dime a dozen. As different variations of these drugs – like Krokodil, for instance – become more common, there’s more opioid slang that you should be familiar with. There are various types of these medicines, but some common street names for opioids include:

  Fentanyl is another particularly dangerous opioid that is being abused increasingly. We’ve treated numerous patients in our prescription pill treatment program who struggled with a fentanyl addiction. Because this drug is often used as an additive or cutting agent in other substances like cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, there are many names for the fentanyl street drug. GHB Street Names (H4)

  Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is an illicit drug that’s commonly used among bodybuilders and is also considered a common club drug. As a depressant, GHB reduces activity in the central nervous system, producing side effects like sedation, short-term memory loss, and reduced control over motor movement. Due to its effects on the central nervous system, GHB is also commonly used as a date rape drug.

  Also known as Flunitrazepam, Rohypnol is a benzodiazepine and central nervous system depressant that’s used to treat severe insomnia and assist in anesthesia. Like GHB, Rohypnol is also abused and used as a date rape drug to facilitate sexual assault due to its sedative side effects.
