At Banyan Treatment Centers Chicago, we believe in not only helping our patients overcome their substance abuse problems but also doing everything in our power to ensure that they maintain long-term success.

To start our patients off on the right foot, we help them by beginning their recovery journey in the right program. Prior to treatment, patients will undergo a thorough assessment of their needs so that they can be placed in the program that is most advantageous for them and their recovery. An example of this is our partial hospitalization program in Chicago, which provides a balance between intensive care and the development of patient independence. Read on to learn more.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured form of treatment for addiction or mental disorders that runs for several hours a day, three to five days a week. As you may have guessed from the name, the PHP level of care for addiction is a step down from inpatient drug treatment programs because it allows patients to return to their homes or sober living facilities at the end of the day.

Although a partial hospitalization program is usually a step down from residential drug treatment, it can also be the first step for some patients. Patients who have already undergone some level of addiction care, like medically monitored detox, or have families and careers to keep up with can greatly benefit from this program.

What Is Partial Hospitalization Like?

Before patients are placed in a specific program at our PHP Chicago drug rehab, they undergo a clinical assessment. This assessment gives our team members more details about the duration and severity of the person’s addiction and physical health to ensure they’re placed in a program that is best suited to their needs.  Our partial hospitalization program in Chicago is the second most intensive level of care at our facility, directly under residential treatment. It is designed to provide patients with full-time support as well as a comfortable and professional setting for their recovery. Patients at our PHP treatment center will participate in various activities and therapy sessions during the day and retire to a sober living facility at night.

How Long Does PHP Last?

As part of our PHP therapy in Chicago, patients will spend 8 hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week, engaging in various programming and drug therapy programs. These programs are designed to support a full PHP recovery from addiction and give patients the tools they need to be successful as they later transition back to their everyday life. Our partial hospitalization program for addiction takes place in both group and individual settings to promote self-discovery as well as peer connection. They include everything from various forms of talk therapy to nontraditional treatment programs such as art therapy

We follow the specific standards and guidelines for partial hospitalization programs. Each session is led by a staff member who is licensed and certified for that specific program, while our small client-to-staff ratio at our PHP in Chicago ensures that patients get the individual support and care they need for a comprehensive recovery. Additionally, because substance abuse is often rooted in mental health problems, we include dual-diagnosis treatment programs as well.

Maintain Recovery at a Sober Living Home

While patients spend most of their day in our Chicago PHP treatment, many patients are not ready to return home at night when drug triggers are everywhere and cravings can be strong. To help our patients avoid relapse, they will stay at an approved sober living facility in the area. These sober living facilities offer patients a home-like environment with an added support system of peers as well as 24-hour staff supervision. The purpose of these living facilities is to help patients create a healthy routine for recovery that can later be adjusted accordingly when they transition into another living arrangement that is less controlled.

Because we believe that your recovery journey should continue outside of our Illinois addiction treatment facility, we also encourage our patients to be active in their sobriety in their free time. Patients can attend outside meetings when available so they can start building a support system outside of our PHP drug rehab. We also urge patients to work on establishing a solid foundation for recovery by creating a healthy routine. This schedule is something that they can continue to build on as they move forward in their recovery journey.

Standards and Guidelines for Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are a type of intensive outpatient treatment for individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders who require structured and comprehensive care but do not need 24-hour inpatient hospitalization. To ensure high-quality care and promote best practices, several organizations have developed standards and guidelines for PHPs.

One such organization is the Joint Commission, which accredits healthcare organizations in the United States. The Joint Commission has established standards for PHPs that cover areas such as patient rights, patient assessment and treatment planning, staffing and qualifications, clinical services, and patient safety. These standards require that PHPs provide evidence-based, individualized treatment plans that are regularly reassessed and adjusted based on patient progress. The standards also emphasize the importance of patient and family involvement in the treatment process, as well as the need for effective communication and collaboration among the interdisciplinary team.

Another organization that provides guidelines for PHPs is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). SAMHSA's guidelines for PHPs focus on promoting recovery-oriented and person-centered care. These guidelines emphasize the importance of treating the whole person, including their physical, emotional, and social needs. SAMHSA's guidelines also address areas such as clinical supervision, cultural competence, and evidence-based practices.

Overall, these standards and guidelines help to ensure that PHPs, like that found at Banyan, provide high-quality, effective care that meets the complex needs of individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders.

How Partial Hospitalization Programs Can Benefit You

Patients experience a variety of advantages when enrolled in one of these programs.

  1. Working with others who have had similar experiences is incredibly helpful. Empathy and community are encouraged among our clients, and this kind of exposure can have a significant impact on a person's recovery.
  2. Daily treatments provide the kind of intense care necessary to see actual improvements. Our team of professionals will provide comprehensive support based on your individual needs.
  3. Being a step down from residential treatment, patients undergo an intense amount of care while working toward the eventual re-acclimation to a sober everyday life.
