Sometimes known as day treatment programs, partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are addiction recovery programs that deliver a high level of care but allow patients to return home every night after treatment. A PHP offers a similar level of treatment and daily structure as that of inpatient and residential treatment programs. While it’s often a “step down” from these more intensive levels of addiction care, some clients enroll directly in PHP as their initial entry into treatment. As part of our Military and Veterans in Recovery program, Banyan offers a partial hospitalization program for veterans and military service members.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program for Addiction?

A partial hospitalization program is a form of addiction treatment and mental health care that allows clients to return home every night after a full day of care. Clients usually receive treatment during the day at the facility. This is a flexible form of addiction care that allows clients to continue their plans and carve out time to work, go to school, and spend time with loved ones.

Our PHP for veterans and active-duty military members is a hospital-based form of outpatient drug rehabilitation. These programs do not require the individual to live at the facility the way that residential treatment programs do. Residential or inpatient care is usually best suited for individuals who require 24-hour care and supervision or medical detox.

PHP, however, is better suited for veterans and military troops who have already undergone medically supervised detox or do not require medical care. These individuals may also require support and structure in addiction recovery but do not require residential care.

Our partial hospitalization program for veterans and military service members allows clients to reintegrate into their lives with constant support. To participate in this level of care, clients need to achieve a degree of stability in their day-to-day lives, especially individuals who are transitioning to civilian life.

Most clients in our Military and Veterans in Recovery Program have spent a lot of time apart from their loved ones and were exposed to a lot of trauma and combat during deployment. Our PHP not only helps them recover from addiction but also allows them to work on their relationships simultaneously so they can see a 360 change in their lives.

Partial Hospitalization vs. Inpatient Treatment

The two types of mental health care—partial hospitalization and inpatient treatment—have different levels of intensity and support for those who seek it. Partial hospitalization, or PHP, is when patients receive treatment during the day and go home at night, skipping the overnight stays.

On the other hand, inpatient treatment, also referred to as residential or hospitalization, requires patients to spend a predetermined amount of time living in a facility around the clock. In PHP, patients receive high-intensity treatment five days a week during the day, with several hours of therapy and support provided daily. Conversely, inpatient treatment provides the best possible care, including 24-hour monitoring and access to a range of therapeutic interventions.

When compared to residential/inpatient treatment, which requires patients to stay in the treatment facility, PHP permits patients to maintain some degree of independence and go about their daily lives outside of treatment hours. PHP is usually best suited for patients who need intensive care but can continue their daily lives at home or in a supportive setting when they are not receiving treatment.

For those in need of a highly regulated and closely watched environment or those with severe mental health conditions, inpatient treatment is usually advised. PHP treatment has a variable duration, but it is typically shorter than inpatient treatment, which could require a longer stay depending on the severity of the condition and the treatment plan.

In terms of PHP costs, it is typically less expensive because it does not provide round-the-clock care. In contrast, inpatient treatment can be more expensive because it provides extensive services and constant supervision.

Depending on the patient's unique needs, the severity of their condition, and the advice of mental health specialists, the choice between partial hospitalization and inpatient treatment is made. It is important to note that a comprehensive assessment is necessary to determine the right amount of support needed for recovery.

Our Veterans and Military Partial Hospitalization Rehab Program

When a veteran or military servicemembers enter our partial hospitalization drug rehab, they can expect to attend individual therapy sessions, group therapy sessions, and family therapy sessions. These will enable them not only to better understand themselves and develop an understanding and appreciation for themselves but also to build a strong support system at home. Through all treatment modalities, our addiction services are overseen by our specialists and/or physicians to ensure comprehensive treatment for the veterans and military personnel in our care.

Individual Therapy Sessions

Our individual counseling for veterans provides tailored and private treatment for each client. Although group sessions are helpful, clients need to have a safe and free space where they can sit one-on-one with our specialists.

We understand that everyone is unique, especially when it comes to addiction recovery. This is why we apply cognitive behavioral therapy and other evidence-based modalities. During one-on-one sessions, clients and counselors work closely to better understand the former’s triggers and best coping strategies.

Group Therapy Sessions

Our military group counseling can sound intimidating, but clients need to be surrounded by others in the recovery community to relate to and learn from. All members in the group have their fears and insecurities, but by exposing clients to each other and having them interact with the guidance of a recovery advocate, they can learn new strategies and develop the motivation to move forward.

Family Therapy Sessions

Like group therapy sessions, our family therapy sessions involve the loved ones of the individual. During these meetings, our counselors work with the family members and partners of clients to address how they’ve been impacted by their loved one’s addiction.

It’s important not only for the sake of the clients’ loved ones but also for the sake of creating a strong support system at home. By educating partners and family members, we can help clients deal with damaged relationships and prepare them for lifelong recovery.
