Celebrities Who Overdosed On Drugs
Substance abuse is common among celebrities and often results in tragedy. Regardless of how famous you are, you are not exempt from this possibility. Below are some heartbreaking and famous cases of famous people who overdosed on drugs.
Mac Miller
Mac Miller was a famous rapper who worked with a variety of other successful artists like Arianna Grande and Ty Dolla Sign. On September 7, 2018, Mac tragically passed away due to an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. The overdose came as a surprise to many of his loved ones because he had been working on his sobriety since 2016. While he had experienced several relapses, he continuously chose to keep working on his sobriety. This is a heartbreaking example of how multiple drugs can harm the body and cause an overdose.

Cory Monteith
Cory Monteith blew up in the industry after starring in the hit TV show Glee. He was known and loved by many for his acting and singing abilities. Sadly, Monteith passed away in 2013 from a drug overdose. A mix of heroin and alcohol was found in his system; which came as a shock to many, especially his girlfriend and coworker at the time Lea Michele. His drug use was never evident to the public. A person’s struggles aren’t always clear, and unfortunately, these struggles aren’t always addressed in time.
Amy Winehouse
Overdose isn’t only limited to drugs. Amy Winehouse was famous for her soulful voice and style. Many people have jammed out to her rendition of “Valerie” at least once. But Amy Winehouse was also well-known for her struggles with substance abuse. The singer suffered from multiple traumatic experiences in her life, which most likely drove her to alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism. Despite receiving alcohol addiction treatment, Winehouse was found dead in 2011 from acute alcohol toxicity.

Prince
Prince created hit songs like “Purple Rain” and “When Doves Cry” as his stardom grew in the 80s. His fan base loved his voice and eccentric outfits, making him an unforgettable performer. But few knew that Prince also had an issue with certain medications he was taking. After an initial overdose that occurred on a plane in 2016, for which he was treated with naloxone, Prince overdosed on fentanyl again a week later; this time he wasn’t so lucky and sadly passed away. While his family attempted to get him help at a rehab center after the first incident, the second overdose occurred before they could.
Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston is one of the most popular stars of all time, bringing fans to tears with one of her most famous songs, “I Will Always Love You.” Despite her popularity, her drug use wasn’t entirely clear until Whitney’s overdose in February of 2012. In addition to abusing substances like Benadryl, Flexeril, and Xanax, Whitney also had atherosclerotic heart disease, which causes a build-up of plaque in the arteries that prevents blood flow. Cocaine was found in her system the night she passed away, which caused an interaction with her heart condition.
