Lawsuits and the Opioid Epidemic in Illinois

Does Addiction Cause Mental Health Issues?

As the building boom continues in Chicago, so does the growth of workplace injuries among the construction industry. With many of these injuries, construction workers are prescribed opioid painkillers, which can quickly turn deadly.

At Banyan Heartland, we offer opioid addiction treatment in Illinois for those affected by the epidemic. While treatment is important, it’s also critical to address the cause of the worsening opioid epidemic in Illinois. Construction unions are now suing opioid manufactures and those they believe are responsible for this epidemic.

Why the Opioid Epidemic in Illinois is Worsening

Those in the construction industry are at a heightened risk of developing an opioid addiction.[1] This is due to a variety of factors, one of the biggest being workplace injuries. Job site injuries can result in painkiller prescriptions, which carries an increased risk of opioid addiction. The lawsuit filed against opioid manufacturers, prescribers, and distributors goes as far as accusing drug companies of fraud. According to the lawsuit, drug companies falsified research and mislead people into thinking these dangerous drugs were not addictive.[2] The goal in the suit is to require drug companies to release information about their drugs for greater transparency and ultimately, a reduction in the number of opioid addiction cases.
